One Big Ask: Help birds migrate by turning off the lights at night

Why it Matters: Millions of songbirds fly over Miami every year as they migrate. Most of these songbirds migrate at night so they can take advantage of cooler temperatures and calmer air. They also avoid being eaten by hawks and other diurnal birds of prey. These nocturnal migrants use a variety of navigational aids, including magnetic fields and the stars, to keep them on course.

However, when these songbirds fly over brightly lit cities at night, the bright lights of tall buildings can often disorient them. This can cause them to be forced off course or make it more likely that they'll collide with a building.
