🎓 Florida International University Welcoming Largest Freshman Class Ever

Driving the news: Florida International University (FIU) is enrolling its largest freshman class this fall, with over 5,800 first-year students, bringing the total student body to more than 49,000. The surge reflects growing demand for FIU’s programs, particularly in STEM fields, where nearly half of incoming students have chosen a major.

Details:

  • Classes begin Aug. 25, with 49,000+ students enrolled as of Aug. 18, up from 48,624 last year.

  • STEM majors account for 48% of the freshman class, with psychology, biology, computer science, and business marketing showing notable growth.

  • The increase in freshman enrollment is part of a broader rise in applicants, with a 30% surge in first-time-in-college applicants over the last year.

Why it matters: The growth underscores FIU’s appeal, especially in high-demand, career-focused programs. As the university continues to attract a diverse student body, it also faces growing demand for on-campus housing, prompting plans to expand its housing capacity by 800–1,000 beds by fall 2028.

The big picture: FIU’s expansion aligns with broader trends in higher education, with students increasingly seeking practical, career-oriented degrees in fields like STEM, finance, and criminal justice.

What’s next: The university’s University Student Housing Project, originally slated for 816 beds, is now looking to accommodate up to 1,174 beds to support continued enrollment growth.

The bottom line: As FIU welcomes its largest-ever freshman class, the university’s rapid growth in both enrollment and housing development is a sign of its rising influence and commitment to meeting the needs of an expanding student population.
