Freedom Park Era Begins as Inter Miami Claims Top Spot

Driving the news: Inter Miami is now Major League Soccer’s most valuable team, worth an estimated $1.45 billion, according to Sportico’s latest rankings.

Details:

  • The club’s valuation jumped 22% year over year, the largest increase in MLS.

  • That surge pushes Inter Miami past Los Angeles FC, which had held the top spot since 2021.

  • In 2021, Inter Miami ranked 14th at $525 million.

  • The club generated $200 million in local revenue last year, including about $21 million from the FIFA Club World Cup.

Why it matters: South Florida is stepping onto the global soccer stage. With the U.S. set to host the 2026 World Cup, Inter Miami’s rise brings international attention, tourism and business activity to the region.

A high-profile franchise helps position Miami as a year-round soccer hub, not just a World Cup host city.

The big picture: The club opens Miami Freedom Park in April, marking a permanent move from Fort Lauderdale. The stadium debut will be anchored by Lionel Messi, 38, who recently extended his contract through 2028.

MLS is also making structural shifts:

  • A revised Apple TV deal means subscribers will no longer need a separate MLS Season Pass.

  • In 2027, the league will align its calendar with FIFA’s July-to-May schedule, reducing playoff overlap with the NFL and college football.

Star power remains central. Recent additions across MLS include Son Heung-min (LAFC), Thomas Müller (Vancouver), James Rodríguez (Minnesota) and Rodrigo De Paul (Inter Miami).

What’s next: Inter Miami opens the season Feb. 21 against LAFC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (9:30 p.m. ET, Apple TV). The home opener at Miami Freedom Park is set for April 4 against Austin FC.
