🏙️ Ken Griffin Seeks Approval for Florida's Tallest Building

Driving the news: Citadel, the hedge fund headed by billionaire Ken Griffin, is seeking approval for a new 54-story tower in Brickell that would become Florida’s tallest building. The mixed-use skyscraper will house the firm’s headquarters, other businesses, and a hotel, all along Biscayne Bay.

Details:

  • The project is located at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive.

  • The tower will span approximately 2 million square feet, including office space, retail, and a 212-room hotel with a spa, conference room, and event space.

  • The developer is requesting a special exception to build closer to the Biscayne Bay shoreline than current zoning allows.

  • Ken Griffin, who relocated Citadel’s headquarters to Miami in 2022, is leading the project with a $3 million donation for stormwater drainage and traffic improvements.

  • FAA approval for the design was granted in July.

Why it matters: This development signals a continued transformation of Brickell and further cements Miami’s position as a growing global hub for finance and real estate. The new tower would also bolster Miami’s skyline and be a notable addition to South Florida’s architectural landscape.

Between the lines: Griffin’s proposed mixed-use tower is expected to have a significant impact on the surrounding area. By offering both office space and hotel accommodations, it creates an integrated experience that could set a new precedent for luxury, business, and hospitality in Miami.

What’s next: The Miami-Dade County Commission is set to vote on the proposal this Thursday, with county staff already recommending approval. If greenlit, construction could begin soon, reshaping Brickell’s skyline and the future of South Florida development.

The bottom line: Ken Griffin’s new Citadel headquarters promises to be more than just an office tower; it’s a bold move that could redefine Brickell and elevate Miami’s global standing in the financial world.
